The official opening of the Botnia Railway
augusti 30th, 2010
The opening ceremony of the Botnia Railway in Umeå August 28th was a huge celebration in which the whole region took part. His Majesty the King led the ceremony and several thousands of people had gathered at the new travel centre to listen to artists, speeches and partake in activities.
The Botnia Railway is the largest railway investment in the history of Sweden since 1937, over 190 km of new railway, 143 bridges and 25 km through tunnels. This is the first railway built for a speed of 250km/h, it is also the first one using the new European signal-system ERTMS.
The Botnia Railway serves as a connecting link between the Ådal railway and the main railway in the north part of Sweden. The new railway increases the capacity for freight and travel, minimises the vulnerability for interruptions and offers high speed train travels along the cost. The Botina Railway is expected to decrease the CO2-emissions and increase traffic safety as a result when more goods are transported along the railway.
