Europe’s heavy dependence on mineral imports must be reduced. Therefore, the EU has taken the decision to allocate roughly 120 million USD in a new program to strenghten europe mineral supplies. The Nordic countries will be important in this new program.
The investment is a multi million initiative called Rawmaters, the largest project since the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) was formed.
It is argued that the EU support will have major benefits both nationally and regionally. According to EU representatives that were present in Luleå last week, Luleå is designated as the leading mining university in Europe, which means that minerals related research can be strengthen.
